I recently decided to finish up a project I had started a while back- turning an old dresser in to a tv stand for the living room.

The dresser was originally cherry, then was spray painted silver, then painted black, then painted white and was now falling apart. When the drawers were shut it looked fine, but the drawers didn’t open properly at the bottom so I decided to take some inspiration from Pinterest and turn it into a tv stand.
So, I searched Pinterest for inspiration…

After seeing some other dressers that had been turned into TV stands, I got started by removing the drawers and and pulling out the cardboard bottom of the shelves.

I decided to use wood crates that I had laying around the house, left over from other projects, as the shelves.

So I pulled the crates apart, and measured the depth of the dresser to determine how much I needed to trim them down. I used a hand saw to cut them because the wood wasn’t that thick.
I had to hammer out the staples that had held the wood together in the crate so it would lay flat in the dresser.

I decided to leave some spacing between the planks and not to fill the holes from the staples in because I liked how it when along with the “rustic”/”distressed” look.

I secured the planks with Elmer’s Wood Glue which secured them in place.

Once the glue dried I painted the entire dresser and wood planks with some left over paint from the kitchen wall (Valspar Lilac Muse). I had to paint the inside of the dresser where the cable box sat and the outside of the drawers since you could see it on the sides.

I went back with sandpaper later and distressed the dresser.
Here is what it looked like before I distressed it.

The next step will be adding baskets to the shelves for storage which we desperately need, mounting the tv to the wall and adding some decorative touches around the tv once it’s mounted.

Stay tuned and I’ll show you the full makeover of the “dresser turned tv stand” and all the decorative touches added to make the living room feel more homey.
